Morocco Faces COVID Surge as Delta Variant Spreads Amid Holiday Gatherings

The massive influx of Moroccans Residing Abroad (MREs) and the celebration of Eid al-Adha have once again plunged the country into a health crisis. Moroccans thought they were free, busy organizing wedding parties, birthdays, baptisms, hikes, and here comes the damned Delta variant to spoil the party. Preventive gestures are flouted and the epidemiological situation is taking a hit.
Has the government been wrong to open the borders and facilitate the return of MREs? Apparently not, say Moroccan epidemiologists, who nevertheless urge it to act urgently to avoid progressing back to square one, reports Hespress.
Despite the health protocol at the entry points of Morocco and all the measures taken, the site recalls, the evolution of the Delta variant raises fears of an epidemiological relapse.
The press releases from the Ministry of Health and the tightening triggered by the Ministry of the Interior have unfortunately not prevented festive gatherings without respect for health measures of social distancing, wearing masks, and hygiene rules, the same source specifies.
Consequence, the virus reproduction curve is progressing at breakneck speed with on average a hundred more cases each day. And it is well on its way to continuing down this path this summer and with the approach of the Feast of Sacrifice.
Nevertheless, to prevent the import of new cases of foreign variants into Morocco, the authorities have taken proactive measures by updating the list of countries in lists A and B. Countries like France, Spain and Portugal where Moroccans Residing Abroad are present in large numbers have moved (as of Tuesday, July 13) to list B where measures are tougher, but nonetheless eased for MREs.
