Morocco Extends Border Closure with Spanish Enclaves Until September, Citing COVID-19

The situation is likely to worsen in the Spanish enclaves. The Moroccan government has decided to keep the border crossings of Sebta and Melilla closed until next September.
The decision, which was communicated to the Spanish authorities through diplomatic channels, was made as part of the national strategy for the prevention and fight against coronavirus, according to the Spanish daily, El Espanõl.
Very doubtful, the daily believes that the kingdom would rather exploit the covid-19 crisis to further stifle the economy of the autonomous cities, by delivering a fatal blow to a strategic sector, namely tourism.
The newspaper adds that a return to normal commercial traffic at the Bab Sebta and Beni Nsar crossing points next fall is far from conceivable, due to the drastic customs measures that the kingdom intends to put in place.
