Morocco Emerges as Key Nearshoring Hub for German Investors

Morocco’s privileged geographical location and its policy of massive investments in the transport and logistics sectors for more than a decade make it a dream destination for German investors.
German investors see Morocco as a gateway to the African continent. "In the perspective of the search for supply and production alternatives, Morocco could play the role of a key player in nearshoring," we can read in the latest issue of the "Bilateral" magazine of the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Morocco.
Germany is an important development partner for Morocco in the automotive, electronics and logistics sectors. The number of German companies established in the kingdom is said to have already reached 93. Strengthening cooperation between the two countries could also allow Morocco to benefit from German expertise in the fields of digitization or the ecological transition.
"Morocco has the foundations to develop an intercontinental logistics vocation," says Mohamed Yousfi, the director of AMDL, who nevertheless insists on the need for the kingdom to continue its efforts to be even more competitive. According to Andreas Wenzel, CEO of the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Morocco, "German companies create more than 35,000 direct jobs in Morocco and many other indirect jobs with local partners".
Morocco is the second African country to receive the most investment from Germany. "The stock of German investments has increased by 643% and Moroccan exports by 122% since 2010," says Andreas Wenzel. Hicham Boudraa, interim CEO of the Moroccan Agency for Investment and Export Development (AMDIE), believes that the two countries still have a lot to offer each other, particularly in the fields of sustainable food production or Industry 4.0.
