Morocco Drops 40 Places in Global Terrorism Safety Ranking After Tourist Murders

Morocco has lost 40 places in the ranking of countries least affected by terrorism. This is due to the murder of two Scandinavian tourists in the province of Marrakech by terrorists affiliated with the Islamic State.
From the 132nd place it occupied in the last ranking, Morocco has plummeted to the 92nd place worldwide out of the 168 countries ranked in the new one. Thus, the Kingdom has left the status of a safer country to a more vulnerable one to terrorism.
This drastic drop in Morocco in the ranking is explained by the murder of two Scandinavian tourists in the province of Al Haouz in 2018, according to the report published by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP). The perpetrators of this assassination are terrorists who had claimed their link to Daesh.
Overall, the report points out that the MENA region has recorded a substantial improvement for the 3rd consecutive year, noting that "only Iran and Morocco have recorded a deterioration".
