Morocco Demolishes Spanish-Owned Beach Houses, Sparking Legal Battle

Several houses built on a beach in northern Morocco for several decades are currently being demolished by the Moroccan authorities, who did not deign to warn the owners, all Spaniards. The latter did not hesitate to bring the matter to court.
As reported by Europa Press, the news of the demolition since last Monday of several houses belonging to residents of Melilla on the Charrana coast for about fifty years has caused a lot of emotion.
The same source specifies that this case had been brought before the Moroccan courts by the various owners, all of Spanish nationality. However, "the Moroccan authorities did not want to wait for this trial to be resolved by the courts."
According to Europa Press, which relies on testimonies collected on the spot, while the demolitions were underway, "the inhabitants looted the houses in front of the owners, with the absolute passivity of the authorities," to the point that they described what happened as a "surprising spectacle", even wondering with regret about the end of an era that saw several generations of Melilla enjoy their houses on the Charrana beach.
The same source reports that the demolitions continued on Tuesday, causing great unease among the people who had kept these houses in this idyllic place located at Cap Tres Forcas, on the Moroccan coast closest to Melilla.
