Morocco's Consumer Prices Rise 2% in January, Driven by Food Costs

The consumer price index rose by 2% in January 2025 compared to the same period of the previous year, according to the High Commission for Planning (HCP). An increase driven by a 3.3% increase in food prices.

Compared to the previous month, the consumer price index increased by 0.8% in January, the result of a 1.6% increase in food prices and stability in non-food prices, the HCP said in a statement. In Casablanca, red meat prices have evolved from 1 to 2 DH/Kg, according to the updated data from Casa Prestations as of the end of November 2024. As for fruits and vegetables, their wholesale prices have risen, reaching 8 DH/kg for tomatoes.

Between December 2024 and January 2025, food prices increased by 6.0% for fish and seafood, 4.7% for vegetables, 2.0% for meat, 1.6% for fruits, 0.6% for "Milk, cheese and eggs", and 0.5% for "Coffee, tea and cocoa". The HCP notes, however, a decrease of 0.5% for "Mineral waters, refreshing drinks, fruit and vegetable juices". At the level of non-food products, only the prices of "Restaurants and cafes" increased by 0.3%.

The consumer price index recorded an increase of 2.0% in January 2025 compared to January 2024, an increase due to a 3.3% increase in the index of food products and 1.1% in that of non-food products. Variations were observed in non-food products, with a decrease of 2.7% for "Transport" and an increase of 3.6% for "Housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels".

By city, the consumer price index recorded increases in Settat (1.5%), Safi (1.3%), Tétouan, Guelmim and Al-Hoceima (1.1%), Kénitra and Marrakech (1.0%), Meknès and Errachidia (0.9%), Tanger and Beni-Mellal (0.8%), Fès and Oujda (0.7%) and Agadir (0.6%). However, a decrease of 0.5% was recorded in Laâyoune, the HCP notes, indicating that the underlying inflation indicator, excluding volatile price products and public tariff products, would have recorded an increase of 0.2% compared to December 2024 and 2.4% compared to January 2024.
