Morocco Considers Third Covid-19 Vaccine Dose for High-Risk Groups

Certain people who have received the two doses of the Covid-19 vaccine and who have risk factors that can weaken their immunity (age, chronic diseases, etc.) could receive a third dose.

The scientific vaccination committee is seriously considering the issue. Some countries like France have already adopted the administration of the third dose of the Covid vaccine, but only to severely immunocompromised people. In Israel, the third dose is administered to cancer patients, transplant patients and those whose vaccine protection has deteriorated. Turkey has also already given the third dose to more than 2.89 million people.

In Morocco, the committee continues to conduct research on the issue. This third dose will concern "an as yet undetermined number of people, currently being estimated, but suffering from chronic diseases or pathologies that temporarily weaken the immunity acquired by the first two doses of the vaccine." The Ministry of Health will announce the list of targeted people and the arrangements to benefit from this third dose.

Regarding the issue, Dr. Moulay Said Afif recalls that the priority and urgency "is to vaccinate a maximum of people with two doses to reach 80% of our population." He stresses that "despite supply difficulties, we have started vaccinating those over 30 to try to achieve herd immunity before the end of 2021."
