Morocco Confirms September 8 Elections Despite COVID-19 Concerns
While rumors suggest a possible postponement of the communal and legislative elections due to the spread of the coronavirus in the kingdom, Abdelouafi Laftit, Minister of the Interior, reassures. These elections will indeed take place on September 8.
"The kingdom has embarked with a strong will on the preparation of the deadlines planned for this year, in accordance with the high guidelines of King Mohammed VI, guarantor of the democratic choice and protector of representative institutions, which aim to consecrate Morocco’s place among democratic countries, in harmony with the provisions of the Constitution which stipulate that the legitimacy of democratic representation draws its foundation from free and transparent elections," said Interior Minister Abdelouafi Laftit during a press conference devoted to the proclamation of the results of the professional elections held last Friday.
He noted that the preparations for the elections of the professional chambers as well as the upcoming general elections are taking place in a context marked by Morocco’s mobilization, like all the countries of the world, to deal with the spread of Covid-19, with all that this requires in terms of mobilization of financial means and human resources to contain it and mitigate its impact.
Despite the constraints related to managing the effects of the pandemic, Morocco has once again set an example, thanks to its remarkable ability to meet major challenges and its strong determination to continue the process of building and consolidating the institutional and democratic foundation, Abdelouafi Laftit continued.
