Morocco Conducts Major Anti-Terror Sweep, Targeting Salafist Networks

The Directorate General of Territorial Surveillance (DGST), in coordination with the General Intelligence (RG), the judicial police and the Royal Gendarmerie of the province of Sidi Slimane, recently carried out a wave of arrests in Salafist circles.
This vast anti-terrorist operation took place in the communes of Kssiba, Dar Belamri, Sidi Slimane, Sidi Kacem and Kénitra on the night of Sunday, December 22 to Monday, December 23, reports Al Akhbar. The operation aims to neutralize the Salafists whose number has considerably increased in the region, from 75 in 2008 to 485 in 2019.
They belong to a jihadist Salafist movement that advocates armed action. This is what justifies the affiliation of many Moroccans from this region to terrorist organizations in Iraq and Syria, the same source indicates.
The recruitment method of these Salafists consists of targeting unemployed young people from poor neighborhoods to whom they offer financial assistance to carry out income-generating activities.
