Morocco Coach Regragui Faces Potential Dismissal After World Cup Qualifier Matches

The days of Walid Regragui, coach of the Atlas Lions, are numbered. If his protégés do not perform well in the matches against Zambia and Congo scheduled for next June as part of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) will terminate the contract.
The unsatisfactory performances of the Moroccan national team against Angola (1-0) and Mauritania (0-0) and their early elimination from the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN Côte d’Ivoire 2023) have put Walid Regragui in difficulty. The adventure could soon come to an end for the coach of the Atlas Lions. The president of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF), Fouzi Lekjaâ, is considering firing him by June, the month during which the Atlas Lions will face Zambia and Congo as part of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, according to sources at Alayam24. In case of defeat or poor performance during these two matches, the boss of Moroccan football will terminate Regragui’s collaboration.
According to the same sources, Fouzi Lekjaâ held a meeting last Saturday with Walid Regragui to question him about the reasons for the poor performance of the Atlas Lions during the two friendly matches of the international break against Angola (1-0) and Mauritania (0-0). While the boss of Moroccan football has meanwhile renewed his confidence in him after Morocco’s disappointing participation in the CAN Côte d’Ivoire 2023, his future remains threatened.
