Morocco to Boost University Professors' Salaries by Year-End, Government Announces

The Head of Government announced his intention to increase the salaries of university professors before the end of 2022, and to sign an agreement with the union before the end of the year. This decision was made during a meeting between Aziz Akhannouch and the Moroccan Union of Higher Education and Scientific Research.

Held at the government headquarters in Rabat, the meeting was attended by the Minister of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Innovation, the advisor to the Head of Government in charge of social dialogue and of course representatives of the Moroccan Union of Higher Education and Scientific Research. During the session, the Union asked the government to establish "a new fair, equitable and stimulating basic regime based on the preservation of income, with a balanced increase in the salaries of all categories of university professors," reports Al Omk Al Maghribi.

For the Union, it is time for the multiple tasks performed by teachers to be paid at their fair value. While emphasizing the deterioration of their legal and social status and the deterioration of their living and working conditions, they stressed the need for the government to intervene to save higher education and its actors.

In a statement summarizing the decisions taken during the meeting, the national union specifies that it has "taken note of the commitment of the Head of Government to deal with the file, since he has asked the Minister of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Innovation to accelerate the pace of meetings with the Moroccan Union of Higher Education and Scientific Research to quickly arrive at a solution".
