Morocco Bolsters Border Security After Migrant Surge from Algeria

Following the attempted entry on Friday of some 2,000 migrants into Melilla, Morocco has decided to further strengthen its military presence on the borders with Algeria. Algerian criminal networks would be behind a "lucrative trafficking with the complicit silence of the Algerian authorities".
Better patrol the borders and provide support to the other forces deployed on the spot, including elements of the Auxiliary Forces, to counter the massive influx of illegal migrants from Algerian soil. This is the measure taken by Morocco in the aftermath of the Melilla tragedy. Investigations have revealed that the illegal migrants who participated in the violent assault on the border with Melilla entered from Algeria, reports the website Maghreb-Intelligence. The influx of migrants - particularly from Darfur, Sudan - to Melilla would be a diplomatic warning shot from the Algerian authorities who have still not digested the normalization of relations between Morocco and Spain thanks to a gesture of support from Madrid for the Moroccan autonomy plan for the Sahara. An issue that has always divided Rabat and Algiers, the support of the Polisario.
It has also been noted that the Darfuri Sudanese have transited through Algeria before joining in large numbers several localities in the Oriental region. Algerian criminal networks would be behind a "lucrative trafficking with the complicit silence of the Algerian authorities," the site believes. Only investigations will be able to confirm or refute this hypothesis.
