Morocco Bans Protest Against Israel Ties and Rising Costs in Casablanca

A protest march has been banned by the Moroccan authorities. The demonstration was scheduled for this Sunday in Casablanca.
In a statement, the coordination of the Moroccan Social Front, composed of left-wing parties and unions, the organizer of the march, indicated that the authorities had notified "the prohibition of the demonstration, citing the maintenance of public order." The protesters planned to denounce the high cost of living, "restrictions on freedoms" and the resumption of relations with Israel.
This ban was also decided due to "non-compliance with the legal requirements related to public marches and demonstrations," according to the Casablanca prefecture.
This refusal "shows that the systematic response (of the authorities) is repression and restrictions on rights and freedoms," stresses the Front, which calls on citizens to participate in a protest sit-in on the same day in Casablanca. However, the national march has been postponed.
It should be recalled that Morocco is facing a historic drought and the effects of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict this year, leading to a surge in fuel and food prices.
