Morocco’s El Bakkali Clinches World Championship Gold in 3,000m Steeplechase

Moroccan Soufiane El Bakkali confirmed his status as the world number 1 in the 3,000m steeplechase. On Monday, he won the gold medal in the event for the first time at the World Championships taking place in Oregon, United States. The athlete completed the distance in 8:25.13.
Olympic champion, El Bakkali put an end to Kenya’s reign in the 3,000 meters steeplechase at the World Championships after overtaking Ethiopian Lamecha Girma (8:26.01), who won the silver medal. The bronze went to Kenyan Conseslus Kipruto (8:27.92).
Thus, after silver in 2017 in London and bronze in 2019 in Doha, the 26-year-old runner has just completed his collection of world medals.
For the record, Morocco has won 30 medals, including 10 gold, 12 silver and 8 bronze, in its 17 previous editions of the World Athletics Championships.
