Morocco Arrests Over 624,000 for Mask Violations Amid COVID-19 Crackdown

The delegate minister to the Minister of the Interior, Noureddine Boutayeb, said on Monday in Rabat that 624,543 people were arrested for not wearing a protective mask. These arrests took place in markets and public spaces between July 25 and October 23.
The minister was speaking before the House of Representatives on the "assessment of the state of health emergency period and the efforts to fight Covid-19". Noureddine Boutayeb stressed that out of these 624,543 arrests, 98,000 people were brought before the courts. These operations were carried out after noting that many people are having difficulty complying with preventive measures.
The minister also stated that the competent services ensure the mandatory wearing of masks by all foreigners and Moroccans at air borders. Any travel outside or within the national territory is done with the presentation of an exceptional travel authorization, whether for professional, study, health or family reasons.
The aim for the authorities is to eliminate all behaviors that cause the surge in contamination cases. During the same period indicated, 62,569 authorizations allowing travel outside the national territory were issued.
