Morocco Approves New Tax on Computers and Tablets to Combat E-Waste

The bill on the tax on computer equipment initiated by the government was easily voted by the House of Representatives.
This, despite the presentation of numerous amendments presented by the opposition deputies. With its majority, the government has indeed managed to pass this tax, also called the green tax or environmental tax.
According to the explanation of the Minister of Finance during the defense of his budget, this tax aims to finance the recycling work of this equipment and to fight against digital pollution. According to the bill, the proceeds of this ICT tax will be allocated to the project of generalization of social protection.
This tax varies between 150 dirhams for laptops (per unit), 200 Dh for desktop computers with a screen, 150 Dh for tablets and 50 Dh for mobile phones. But will also be applied to televisions (100 Dh per unit) to vehicle batteries (50 Dh per unit), to refrigerators and to electric lamps... etc.
It remains to be seen whether the law will suffer the same fate in the House of Advisors where the CGEM and trade unions intervene.
