Morocco Unveils Bold Strategy to Tackle Inequality and Boost Global Influence

Morocco has embarked on a restructuring of its development model, a strategic orientation detailed by King Mohammed VI in his speech on July 29. The stated objective is to make social justice and the reduction of territorial inequalities the main lever for the country’s stability and international influence.

This new roadmap responds to a contrasting economic and social situation, indicate les Echos. The country has experienced accelerated modernization over the past decades, with significant achievements in infrastructure, such as the Tanger-Med port and the high-speed rail line, and successful industrialization in the automotive and aeronautics sectors. These advances have led to a reduction in the poverty rate and Morocco’s accession to the category of countries with "high human development". However, these successes mask the persistence of strong social and regional disparities, which fuel a risk of fracture between an integrated urban population and rural and precarious areas.

To correct these imbalances, the new development plan favors a territorialized approach. The aim is no longer to apply uniform national policies, but to adapt the state’s interventions to the specific characteristics and concrete needs of each region. The sectors of employment, health, education, or water resource management are at the heart of this approach. This targeted development policy primarily concerns the southern provinces, in the context of the Western Sahara issue, as well as other rural areas facing a lack of infrastructure and equipment.

According to the Moroccan authorities, strengthening this internal cohesion is an imperative condition for the continuation of the kingdom’s ambitions. A more united and less unequal population is considered more resilient to shocks, whether natural disasters, such as the 2023 earthquake, or the effects of climate change. This cohesion is also presented as the foundation of political unity and institutional stability, a major factor in a regional environment marked by tensions and regime changes.

This strategy directly linking economic development, social justice, and political stability aims to firmly establish Morocco’s influence. By consolidating its domestic front in the run-up to the 2026 electoral deadlines, the country intends to secure its trajectory and strengthen its position on the international stage, where the world of instability and power rivalries requires above all a strong national unity.
