Morocco Approves 5% Minimum Wage Increase for Agricultural and Non-Agricultural Sectors

The draft decree concerning a revision of the guaranteed minimum interprofessional wage (SMIG) and the guaranteed minimum agricultural wage (SMAG) has been approved by the government council.
The announcement, made by Mustapha Baitas, government spokesperson, provides that this 5% increase concerns both the agricultural and non-agricultural sectors and will be effective as of September 1, 2023.
This choice is the concretization of a tripartite agreement, including the government, the trade unions and the General Confederation of Moroccan Enterprises (CGEM), covering the period 2022-2024. It aims in particular at a 10% increase in the SMIG over two years for the industry, commerce and services sectors, while harmonizing the minimum wage between these branches and agriculture.
Following a first increase in September 2022, the hourly SMIG went from 14.81 dirhams to 15.55 dirhams. The agreement provides for the hourly rate to reach 16.30 dirhams for the industry, commerce and services sectors, bringing the monthly salary to 3,111.39 dirhams. As for the SMAG, it will reach 88.58 dirhams, or 2,303.08 dirhams per month.
Chakib Alj, president of the CGEM, had previously confirmed during a conference that companies would apply this second increase in the minimum wage as soon as the government gave the green light.
