Morocco Allows Repatriation of Dual Citizens Stranded Due to Flight Suspensions

Morocco has finally authorized Belgium to repatriate the Belgo-Moroccans blocked in the kingdom due to the suspension of air flights and their dual nationality status. Only persons able to demonstrate "serious humanitarian or social reasons" will be taken into account by this repatriation operation.

The cry for help from Belgo-Moroccans has finally been heard. The Belgian embassy in Rabat is already contacting by email some of the people stuck in Morocco, to inform them of the organization of their repatriation.

"Contrary to false claims, our government does not make any difference between its nationals. But dual nationality is a matter of law that applies to our two States, and therefore, to everyone. However, the Moroccan authorities have shown in recent days a willingness to derogate from the rule of non-displacement of dual nationals, for specific humanitarian and social reasons, and for those who are on short-term stay in Morocco," the embassy emphasizes.

The text specifies these reasons: "Humanitarian reasons cover compelling medical reasons (serious health risk) covered by a Moroccan or Belgian medical certificate. Serious social reasons such as family separation (parents and children, especially if minors) due to events (e.g. children or parents visiting other family members in Morocco and unable to return due to the pandemic); the risk of job loss or business bankruptcy due to prolonged absence."

The embassy also asks the persons concerned to send them by email, by April 17, 2020, "the complete data (name, first name, date of birth, national register number); the medical or social elements that justify, if applicable and on the basis of the indications given above, the request for assistance to return to Belgium".
