Morocco’s Alcohol Tax Revenue Soars as Tourism Rebounds in 2022

With the return of tourists to Morocco, fiscal royalties on the consumption of alcoholic beverages have exploded in 2022, according to data published by the Ministry of Economy and Finance.
The consumption of alcoholic beverages generated more than 2 billion dirhams for the state coffers. In recent years, tax revenues imposed on alcohol have often exceeded government expectations. In 2021, they were around 1.8 billion dirhams, an increase of about 11% compared to 2020. According to the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the state collected 942 million dirhams on wines and spirits, while it expected 630 million dirhams, reports Hespress.
As for the tax on beer, it reached 1.1 billion dirhams, compared to 814 million dirhams planned in the 2022 finance law. According to the same data published by the department of Nadia Fettah Alaoui, import duties contributed to feeding the state coffers for about 13.6 billion dirhams, while the government was counting on only 11.8 billion dirhams.
