Morocco’s Alcohol Tax Revenue Surges, Exceeding Government Projections

In 2021, revenue from fees imposed on the consumption of alcoholic beverages saw a significant increase, exceeding the government’s forecasts included in the Finance Act.
Revenue from fees imposed on alcohol and spirits reached around 810 million dirhams, compared to 651 million dirhams expected, according to the execution report of the 2021 Finance Act published by the Ministry of Economy and Finance. As for the revenue from the fee imposed on beer types, it was around 1 billion dirhams in 2021, while the government had expected 800 million dirhams. The revenue from the two fees thus saw an increase of around 359 million dirhams, the report specifies. As for the revenue from the fees imposed on non-alcoholic beverages and lemonade, it also increased during the year 2021. It brought in around 504 million dirhams for a forecast of 450 million dirhams.
As for the fees from the Algerian gas pipeline crossing Morocco to Spain, they reached around 763 million dirhams at the end of October 2021, the date of its closure, while the government had not forecast any revenue in this regard. As for the fee imposed on manufactured tobacco, it brought in around 11.7 billion dirhams against forecasts of 11.2 billion dirhams.
