Morocco’s Alcohol Tax Revenue Soars as Tourism Rebounds

Since last summer, revenue from fees on the consumption of alcoholic beverages has seen a strong increase, thanks in particular to the return of tourists to the kingdom.
According to figures from the General Treasury of the Kingdom (TGR) cited by Les Inspirations Eco, this revenue increased, at the end of August, by 81% compared to the same period last year, +117% in September, +95% in October and +96% at the end of November. A sign, according to the daily, that it is now "party time" in Morocco, after two years of health restrictions.
"After the Covid period, people have a stronger and more pronounced desire than before to indulge in alcoholic beverages. There are also beginners, mainly people who have started to take it for various reasons, including stress," we explain.
This increase in revenue from the fees imposed on the consumption of alcoholic beverages is also attributable to the return of foreign tourists to Morocco, after the reopening of borders and the resumption of air services in February last year, the same source points out, recalling that at the end of September, tourist arrivals stood at 7.7 million, totaling 13.2 million overnight stays, compared to 2.8 million arrivals and 6.6 million overnight stays during the same period in 2021.
Moreover, the Société des Boissons du Maroc (SBM), the market leader, has confirmed this trend, announcing an increase in its turnover this year. It stands at 995 million dirhams, up 11.3% compared to 2021.
