Morocco Aims to Expand Fiber Optic Internet to Half its Population by 2025

Morocco is showing its ambition in fiber optics. The Head of Government has just stated, on the occasion of the Board of Directors of the National Telecommunications Regulatory Agency (ANRT), that he wants to fiber at least 50% of the Moroccan population by 2025.

This desire to make the telecommunications sector in Morocco one of the main levers will help bridge the digital divide and reduce social and spatial disparities.

El Otmani specified that the government’s ambition is to generalize access to high-speed internet in all regions of the kingdom and very high-speed internet in areas of high economic activity. A vision that is in line with the conclusions of the Special Commission on the Development Model, the press release states. He also invited the ANRT to implement a national optical connection plan to cover, before the end of 2025, at least 50% of Moroccan households with very high-speed fiber optic services reaching at least 100 megabits per second.

Emphasizing the major role played by the telecommunications sector in securing and ensuring the continuity of services and transactions during the coronavirus pandemic, the Head of Government noted that the use of the internet, which has soared by 55%, has mitigated the repercussions of this crisis. It has notably enabled the continuity of work, education, training, commerce and audio and visual communication.

These achievements have been reached thanks to the sufficient stock that Morocco has in terms of equipment capable of meeting the needs of customers and telecom operators, El Otmani said, also citing free access to platforms and sites dedicated to distance learning and training, as well as certain social platforms. To this end, he called on the players to continue their efforts to guarantee innovative, adapted and quality solutions meeting their needs.
