Morocco Aims for 14th Straight Win as Regragui Tests Squad Depth in Zambia Clash

After validating their ticket for the 2026 World Cup by defeating Niger (5-0), the Moroccan national team travels to Zambia this Monday, September 8th. While this 8th round qualifier match is now without stakes in the standings, with the first place in Group E already secured, it holds strategic importance for coach Walid Regragui and his squad.
The main objective stated by the staff is to maintain the momentum and not let the concentration slip. Walid Regragui is aiming for a fourteenth consecutive victory for his protégés. "This is our 13th win in a row [...]. We will try to continue this momentum," he said after Friday’s match, indicating that his team will not go to Ndola for a mere friendly game.
To achieve this goal while preparing for the future, the coach has announced his intention to proceed with a wide rotation of the squad. "We can try things in the next match against Zambia," he explained. The idea is to give playing time to players who are usually substitutes in order to "further unite the group" and evaluate the depth of the squad. "There is competition within the group. [...] It’s a good headache to put together the starting eleven," he added.
Several players are therefore expected to take the field. In midfield, Bilal El Khannouss and Azzedine Ounahi, who scored after coming on as a substitute against Niger, could be in the starting lineup. In attack, the experienced Youssef En-Nesyri could be lined up, as well as Ilias Akhomach, a player appreciated by the coach and back from injury. Amine Adli and the young winger Chemsdine Talbi are also hoping to get minutes to establish themselves in the national team.
This squad review is part of a broader perspective: the preparation for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, described as "the flagship event of this year". This match in Zambia, played without the pressure of the result, is an ideal opportunity to build confidence and test tactical schemes in view of the continental competition that will be held in Morocco.
