Morocco Acquires Israeli-Made Precision Attack Drones

Morocco continues to strengthen and modernize its army. It recently acquired the SpyX kamikaze drone from BlueBird Aero Systems, a subsidiary of Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), and plans to produce it locally.
Since the normalization of their relations in December 2020, Morocco and Israel have strengthened their defense cooperation. Last year, the kingdom acquired the SpyX suicide drone, a mini-drone dedicated to reconnaissance and attack missions with high precision. With a flight endurance of 90 minutes and a range of 50 kilometers, this drone can reach speeds of over 250 km/h and locate and neutralize targets with great precision, according to La Razon.
The SpyX is also equipped with a high-resolution camera and advanced video tracking, allowing it to carry out precision-guided attacks. Its 2.5 kg explosive charge can be configured according to the type of target, whether enemy personnel, light vehicles or even armored vehicles. Before this kamikaze drone, the Royal Armed Forces (FAR) had already strengthened their capabilities with the WanderB-VTOL and ThunderB-VTOL models, compatible with the SpyX, effective in attack and aerial surveillance missions.
Since the signing of a defense pact in 2021, Morocco has acquired several drones from Israel, including 150 WanderB and ThunderB drones in 2022. According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), 11% of Israel’s arms exports are destined for Morocco. The kingdom also plans to produce these drones locally, with technical support from Israel.
The acquisition of suicide drones such as the SpyX strengthens Morocco’s military power and could alter the balance of power in the region. Spain, Morocco’s neighbor, is concerned about the purchase of this equipment. Meanwhile, voices continue to be raised in Morocco calling for the suspension of diplomatic relations between Rabat and Tel Aviv due to the conflict in the Gaza Strip. For their part, the Moroccan authorities have maintained defense cooperation with Israel, while providing humanitarian aid to the Palestinian population.
