Morocco Accuses Algeria of Sabotaging African Development Summit in Tokyo

Morocco claims that Algeria’s attempt to have the Polisario participate in the 9th edition of the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) held on August 24 and 25 in Japan had a negative impact on the summit, as it resulted in a complete failure, particularly for African countries.

On August 23, members of the separatist movement arrived in Tokyo with Algerian diplomatic passports and infiltrated the meeting room where the preparatory meeting for the 9th edition of TICAD was taking place with badges from the Algerian delegation. One of them "opened his portfolio and took out a plate marked ’Sahrawi Republic’ which he placed in front of him. Except that the typography of the plate does not in any way resemble that of the countries invited to this meeting. Immediately, a Japanese official provided clarifications: ’The presence of this entity in no way means recognition’ and Japan ’does not recognize this entity’."

In a statement reported by the Spanish newspaper La Razón, Moroccan diplomacy stated that Algerian diplomacy resorted to forgery and the use of false documents, in addition to barbaric physical aggression, in order to create the illusion that the Polisario had participated in the TICAD summit. In Tokyo, an Algerian diplomat violently attacked a Moroccan when the latter tried to remove a "SADR" placard. In a video, we see a man who violently grabs the Moroccan and throws him to the ground.

In the eyes of Moroccan diplomacy, the result of this Algerian deception was that the TICAD summit turned into a complete failure. Algeria has deprived the African continent of an important opportunity to strengthen its development, it added, calling on African countries to hold Algeria solely responsible for this failure. According to Moroccan diplomacy, the regrettable spectacle organized by Algerian diplomacy in Tokyo does no honor to Africa and has given a devastating image of the continent.

"Algeria’s serious acts threaten the stability and development of the continent; consequently, African countries must unite to face and put an end to them," concludes Moroccan diplomacy.
