Algeria Appoints Saïd Moussi as Ambassador to Portugal Amid Western Sahara Tensions

Saïd Moussi was appointed on Thursday as Algeria’s ambassador to Portugal. A nomination apparently well received in Morocco given the change in position on the Sahara by Spain and France, two countries in which the Algerian diplomat had previously held the same functions.
Morocco seems to be pleased with the appointment of Saïd Moussi as Algeria’s ambassador to Portugal, a position he had held successively in Spain and France, before being recalled, in reaction to the change, by these two countries, of their position on the Sahara in favor of Morocco.
Observers believe that the Algerian diplomat could face the same fate in Lisbon and be recalled for consultations in the event of recognition of the Moroccanness of the Sahara by the Portuguese authorities, underlining the diplomatic offensive that Morocco is carrying out to make the international community, particularly Europe, adhere to its cause.
"The curse of Morocco pursues the Algerian ambassador," ironized some Internet users on social networks. For some analysts, the repeated recalls of Moussi are indicative of the failure of Algerian foreign policy and the country’s inability to maintain stable diplomatic relations with European countries.
