Morocco 60000 hotel beds 2030 World Cup tourism growth

Morocco is accelerating the development of its hotel supply in preparation for the 2030 World Cup, which it will organize with Spain and Portugal. The country plans to create 60,000 additional beds over the coming years.

This expansion represents approximately one-fifth of the roughly 300,000 beds currently available in the kingdom. Morocco had already added 45,000 beds to its hotel capacity over the past four years.

"We consider the 2030 World Cup as an accelerator, not as an end in itself," explained Tourism Minister Fatim-Zahra Ammor to Reuters.

The goal is to capitalize on the international attention linked to football to sustainably develop a sector that accounts for approximately 7% of gross domestic product and employs several hundred thousand people.

Morocco wants to surpass 26 million tourists

Morocco welcomed nearly 20 million tourists last year and now aims for 26 million visitors by 2030. Authorities are counting in particular on the opening of new air routes from Europe.

The next phase should also help attract more travelers from China, the United States, and the Middle East, through improved air connectivity.

In parallel, more than 190 billion dirhams must be invested in railways, roads, airports, stadiums, and urban infrastructure related to the World Cup.

The government also wants to better distribute visitors among different destinations. Rabat should thus be positioned more on cultural tourism, sporting events, and business travel, in order to reduce the concentration of arrivals in Marrakech and Agadir.

The number of matches Morocco will host in 2030 has not yet been determined. But the kingdom intends to have, before the competition, sufficient accommodation capacity to absorb the influx of visitors without limiting its ambition to just the tournament month.
