Moroccans highly critical of the 2030 World Cup logo

The logo for the 2030 World Cup, jointly organized by Morocco, Spain and Portugal, has sparked a wave of criticism from Moroccan internet users who deplore "the absence of Arabic and representation of Moroccan identity in its design".

On the logo, the number 30 is represented with the colors of the flags of the three host countries (red, green and yellow) and a light blue symbolizing the Mediterranean. At the bottom of this design, the slogan "YALLA VAMOS 2030" is written in large letters, with "Yalla" meaning "let’s go" in Arabic, and "Vamos" meaning the same thing in Portuguese and Spanish. Under the slogan, the names of the three host countries are written in English alphabetical order: Morocco, Portugal, Spain, reports El Confidencial.

Moroccan internet users have severely criticized this logo, mainly the slogan, arguing that the word "yalla" is not Moroccan and is used in the Middle East. They recommend writing it with an "l" and an "h" at the end (yalah), as it is used in Morocco. They also suggest using the word "sir", which was the slogan of the Moroccan team during the 2022 Qatar World Cup, and which they say is very well known to Moroccans. Moroccan internet users would also have liked the word Yalla to be written in Arabic.

For now, this logo, unveiled on Tuesday at the headquarters of the Portuguese Football Federation in Lisbon, has not yet been validated by FIFA. It is the visual identity of the joint bid of Morocco, Spain and Portugal that will be presented to the world football governing body in July 2024. The bid will have as ambassadors the former Moroccan international Noureddine Naybet, the Spaniard Andrés Iniesta and the Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo and Luis Figo, as well as other stars like Achraf Hakimi, Yassine Bounou, Ghizlane Chebak, Emmanuel Adebayor.
