Moroccans, check your wallets: these banknotes will soon have no value
Bank Al-Maghrib has announced the official withdrawal of several series of banknotes as of January 1, 2026. This decision is part of Decree No. 2.25.966 dated December 23, 2025.
The banknotes affected by this withdrawal lose their legal tender and discharging power as of the first day of the year 2026. These are the following denominations:
• The 10, 50, 100 and 200 dirham banknotes issued in 1987.
• The 10 dirham banknotes issued in 1990.
• The 20 dirham banknotes dated 1996.
To ensure a smooth transition, Bank Al-Maghrib offers citizens the opportunity to exchange these banknotes, without condition, at its own counters as well as at those of banking institutions throughout the country. This system will be in place until December 31, 2030.
The central bank therefore invites any person still holding these old denominations to have them replaced within the allotted time.
