Moroccans abandon calls and SMS for the Internet

The telecommunications landscape in Morocco has reached a decisive milestone in 2025. Users are massively abandoning voice calls and SMS in favor of the Internet and instant messaging, driven by the meteoric rise of 5G.

According to the annual analytical note from the National Telecommunications Regulatory Agency (ANRT), the mobile market reached a record of 59.16 million subscriptions at the end of 2025. This annual increase of 1.5% brings the penetration rate to 160.65%, illustrating the normalization of holding multiple SIM cards by the population.

The overall volume of outgoing calls has plummeted by 12.55% to stand at 40.90 billion minutes. The average monthly usage has collapsed to only 58 minutes per subscriber, while SMS sending has plunged by 16.46% due to the overwhelming competition from applications like WhatsApp.

In parallel, the Internet segment is experiencing sustained growth with 41.46 million subscriptions recorded, the vast majority of which are for mobile. 5G technology is becoming firmly established with 2.63 million users, supported by the deployment of more than 9,000 dedicated antennas across the national territory.

This transition towards a "data economy" is proving profitable for Moroccan operators. The overall turnover of the sector recorded a 2.12% increase in 2025, with the marketing of very high-speed and fiber optic broadband largely offsetting the financial losses related to the decline of traditional communications.
