Moroccan World Cup Player’s Hijab Sparks Debate and Support Amid Islamophobic Attacks

Moroccan preacher Ahmed Raissouni has defended Moroccan defender Nouhaila Benzina, the first player to wear the veil during a women’s World Cup. She is the target of extremists.
Attacked by extremists, Nouhaila Benzina can count on the support of Moroccan preacher Ahmed Raissouni. He condemned the vicious Islamophobic attacks targeting the Moroccan defender, reports Itlala Press. Raissouni says he appreciates Benzina’s abilities and her commitment to proudly wearing the hijab despite "distractions and pressures". Responding to a question from his disciples on wearing the veil during a sporting event, he said that "there is no harm, no objection".
Stressing that many considerations had to be taken into account when examining the issue, he indicated that "when it comes to a particular player who has overcome obstacles and excelled, we do not know much about her beyond that. We can only appreciate her skills and her commitment to wearing the hijab, declaring it proudly despite the distractions and pressures".
Nouhaila Benzina has made history by becoming the first hijabi player in the Women’s World Cup. Very quickly, she faced criticism from several international media, especially French ones. In July, the French sports newspaper L’Équipe stated that Ms. Benzina’s decision to wear the hijab was "very controversial". CNews sparked a similar controversy with Islamophobic remarks. The French media described the hijab as an "incredible regression".

There are not only critical comments targeting the Moroccan defender. She also receives support. "Nouhaila Benzina has become the first player to wear the hijab during a FIFA Women’s World Cup match. Football is inclusive, tolerant, universal and diverse," said Gianni Infantino, the FIFA president. Since 2014, the international governing body of football has allowed the wearing of the hijab in international matches.
