Moroccan Woman Dies in Border Zone While Seeking Emergency Care in Spanish Enclave

A 60-year-old Moroccan woman died on Thursday morning in the "buffer zone" between Spain and Morocco as she was trying to access Melilla to be treated at the Comarcal Hospital in the city. The news was confirmed by Moroccan sources from the border area of Bni Nsar before the local authorities of Melilla confirmed the death.
According to sources cited by the local newspaper El faro de Melilla, the deceased was being evacuated to Melilla by ambulance, accompanied by a nurse, from a private clinic in Nador in a "very serious" condition. Unfortunately, she did not survive and died in the no man’s land separating the two countries.
The Moroccan authorities did everything possible to allow the ambulance to reach the Melilla hospital. The governor of Nador personally took care of the situation, ordering the police to let the ambulance pass through to Melilla.
Thus, the passport was stamped very quickly and the gates were opened to allow the ambulance to pass through to the city without hindrance. Despite this, it was not possible to save the woman’s life.
On the orders of the Attorney General of Nador, the woman’s body was transported to the Hassani hospital for an autopsy, it was reported.
The government delegation indicated that the events occurred around 6 a.m., when an ambulance from Morocco arrived at the border and reported that this woman was ill and wanted to be taken to the Comarcal Hospital. It was then that the national police officers requested the presence of the emergency service to assess the situation of this person and decide whether or not she should be transferred to the hospital. Unfortunately, the doctors could only confirm her death.
