Moroccan Taxi Drivers Seek COVID-19 Aid Amid Nationwide Lockdown

The General Union of Enterprises and Professions (UGEP) has written to the Economic Monitoring Committee to plead for the inclusion of some 200,000 taxi drivers on the list of non-Ramid beneficiaries of the financial aid from the Special covid-19 Fund. These drivers are no longer working due to the confinement imposed on all citizens.
In its correspondence, the UGEP states that more than 200,000 taxi drivers find themselves without activity due to the confinement decreed by the Moroccan authorities in order to curb the spread of the coronavirus. As a result, they no longer have any income to meet their family expenses.
The UGEP recalls that these taxi drivers hold a trust permit issued by the authorities and a professional card. They have also all undergone qualifying training on road safety. The only problem is that "they are considered to be working in the informal sector."
