Moroccan Singer Threatens Legal Action Over Film Depicting Daughter's Murder

Moroccan singer Leïla Ghofrane did not hide her indignation following the exploitation of the story of the murder of her daughter, Hiba Al Akkad, in a film, reserving the right to take legal action against any cinematographic or artistic work that would allude to this case.

Leila Goufrane made it known that she would never accept that this film address the case of the murder of her daughter, especially if the facts are presented in a way that harms the reputation of the latter. In a statement to the magazine "Sayidaty", the Moroccan artist threatened to file a complaint against the producers of this film if her suspicions were to be confirmed.

The film in question tells the story of the murder of several students with a particular emphasis on the mother of one of them who is a dancer, said the Egyptian screenwriter, Mohamed El-Ghaiti, who wrote the screenplay for the film, assuring that it is not a reconstruction of the murder of the artist’s daughter, which occurred in Egypt in 2008.

The last part of the film presents the trial of the student Naira, killed by a classmate in 2020. During this scene, the words spoken by Bahaa El-Marry, the president of the Mansoura court, were repeated verbatim before the murderer was sentenced to death.

To recall, Hiba Al Akkad, Laïla Ghofrane’s daughter, as well as her Egyptian friend, Nadine Khlad Jamaleddine, had been murdered in November 2008 in an apartment in the residential suburb of the Egyptian capital. The murderer, Mahmoud Sayed Abdel Hafed Issawi, a 19-year-old carpenter, had been sentenced to death in 2010. He was hanged on May 19, 2014.
