Moroccan Singer Karima Gouit Faces Trial for Alleged Insult to Police Officer

Karima Gouit is suspected of having insulted a police officer at Marrakech’s Menara airport on April 19. This incident had led to her arrest and the drafting of a report against her. The public prosecutor’s office had then decided to prosecute her while she was at liberty.

The Moroccan artist has always denied the accusations against her. In her statements, she affirmed that the rumors concerning a dispute with a police officer at the airport were unfounded.

In Morocco, any insult towards a public official, including law enforcement officers, is punishable by a prison sentence of one month to one year and a fine of 250 to 5,000 dirhams. The Penal Code defines outrage as: words, gestures, threats, sending or delivering any object, either in writing or by drawing not made public.
