Moroccan Singer Jewelry Theft: Housekeeper Gets 8 Years Prison

The Tangier Court of Appeal has sentenced the housekeeper of singer Chaima Chaounia to eight years in prison. The 19-year-old woman was found guilty of complicity in a burglary worth 50,000 euros.

To commit the crime in early May, the housekeeper had provided a duplicate set of keys to her boyfriend. Investigators consider him the mastermind of the theft committed in Tangier. The man then planned the heist with a third accomplice, currently at large. Although the defense argued emotional manipulation, claiming the suspect had promised her marriage, the judges rejected this argument. It was the young woman herself who had alerted authorities after pretending to discover the forced door and ransacked rooms.

The final sentence requires the guilty parties to jointly pay 120,000 dirhams in damages to the artist, who had claimed a higher amount for her losses. During this burglary, jewelry and gold items valued between 45,000 and 50,000 euros (approximately 500,000 dirhams) disappeared. In the same case, an individual received two years in prison for receiving stolen goods after knowingly concealing the loot. The investigation remains active to locate the main suspect still being sought by police.
