Moroccan Senate President Sparks Controversy Over Ceuta and Melilla Comments

The President of the House of Councillors (Moroccan Senate) and member of the executive committee of the Istiqlal party, Enaam Mayara, stated on Sunday that Ceuta and Melilla are "occupied territories" and that Morocco "will eventually recover" these two autonomous cities. Remarks that have caused some embarrassment both in Morocco and in Spain.
Enaam Mayara does not seem to have measured the extent of his statement on Ceuta and Melilla, deliberately or not creating tensions in the relations between Morocco and Spain. In the official Moroccan media, the emphasis is on the fact that Mayara stressed that the recovery of the two autonomous cities will be done "without resorting to arms", "without blackmail" and through "negotiation" with Spain, reports La Razón.
But Mayara’s remarks were strongly criticized by other media, which recalled that the orientation of the kingdom’s foreign policy is the prerogative of King Mohammed VI. "Who encouraged you to meddle in these dangerous diplomatic games? What you are doing is favoring the enemies of Morocco, particularly Algeria and France," analyzes a digital media.
Mayara called on the Moroccan community in Spain to work to "form a lobby to defend their homeland, Morocco" and "join Spanish political parties and participate in municipal or legislative elections", in order to "evolve positions in favor of Morocco". He also called for collaboration between Moroccan and Spanish associations to bring Morocco’s point of view closer on issues such as the Sahara.
