Moroccan Protesters Rally Against Israeli Military Chief’s Historic Visit

Many Moroccans are opposed to the first official visit to Morocco of an Israeli army chief of staff. Aviv Kochavi arrived in Rabat on Monday, July 18.
In Morocco, the Palestine Action Group views the official visit of the Israeli army chief in a bad light. On Monday, it organized a sit-in in front of the Parliament in Rabat to protest against this visit. The group also firmly condemned the hosting of the "Zionist war criminal whose hands are dripping with the blood of thousands of Palestinian and Moroccan children," reports The New Arab. This anti-Zionist movement stressed "the importance of the collective popular struggle" against normalization.
Since the normalization of their diplomatic relations in exchange for the American recognition of the Moroccanness of the Sahara, Morocco and Israel have been working to strengthen their cooperation in several areas, including the military. At the end of June, Israeli military observers participated for the first time in the Moroccan-American military exercise African Lion 2022 in Morocco. Another major action: Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz and his Moroccan counterpart, Abdellatif Loudiyi, had signed several agreements aimed at strengthening military cooperation between the two countries during his working visit to the kingdom in late November 2021. These agreements provide for, among other things, cooperation between intelligence services, the development of industrial links, the purchase of weapons and joint training.
