Moroccan Produce Prices Surge: Vegetables and Fruits See Sharp Increases

The prices of vegetables and fruits have seen an increase in almost all markets in Morocco, like other food commodities. How to explain such an increase?

In a few days, the price of carrots has gone from 3 dirhams to 6 dirhams per kg, that of potatoes has almost doubled to 5 dirhams per kg, while the price of tomatoes is set at 6 dirhams. As for fruit prices, they have also increased. This is the case in particular for apples, which are sold at 18 dirhams instead of 12 dirhams, and local bananas, which have gone from 10 dirhams to 14 dirhams, reports SRNTnews.

Questioned, Jaafar Saban, director of the wholesale vegetable and fruit market in Casablanca, explained that this situation is due to the lack of human resources during the Eid Al Adha period, which results in a distribution problem. "The volume of goods coming from all cities and transported to the Casablanca wholesale market has seen a drop of nearly 40%," he said.

As for El Fatmi El Bourkizia, president of the Moroccan Association for Agricultural Development for the Casablanca-Settat region, he stressed that the heat wave and the scarcity of water affecting agricultural yields are also determining factors in this high cost of vegetables and fruits.
