Moroccan Poultry Prices Soar: Heat, Season, and Middlemen Blamed

The surge in poultry prices in Morocco would be due to the heat, the summer season and the multiplication of intermediaries. This is at least the explanation given by the interprofessional federation of the poultry sector (Fisa).
The price of poultry has seen a dizzying increase everywhere in Morocco in recent days. It has reached an unaffordable price, even for middle-class wallets. It has been selling for over 30 DH per kilogram for a few months and can reach up to 32 DH/Kg in certain regions, the federation said, adding that at the factory level, the price per kilogram of chicken varies between 23 and 25 DH.
"The surge in selling prices does not mean an increase in the producers’ margin," explained Fisa, stressing that "the price of chicken, ex-farm is 17 DH/kg, while the cost price has increased to 16 DH/kg or even 16.5 DH/kg, due to the explosion in the prices of poultry feed."
This rise in poultry prices is also attributable to the multiplication of intermediaries, the organization added, stressing that "to reach the final consumer, the poultry goes through the wholesale market, then reaches the suppliers and finally the store."
At the same time, this price surge is also linked to the heat that has impacted the growth rate, the same source points out, specifying that it has dropped to 1.7 kg per chicken, compared to 2 kg and more normally.
