Moroccan Population Surges to 30,000 in Balearic Islands, Overtaking German and British Expats

Moroccans constitute the largest foreign community residing in the Balearic Islands, ahead of Germans and British. From around 3,860 in 1997, the Moroccan population has been multiplied by nearly 10, currently reaching a little less than 30,000 people.

According to statistics recently published by Ibestat, Germans and British are no longer the most numerous in the Balearic Islands. The largest foreign community is made up of Moroccans, who are estimated at 29,489, while they were barely 3,860 in 1997. Meanwhile, the German population in the Balearic Islands has halved, dropping from 36,259 residents in 2012 to 18,775 in 2022. As for the British, their number is currently 19,211, while it was 23,562 in 2012.

This decline in the German and British populations is partly due to the new tax measures aimed at real estate. Most of them have left the Balearic Islands because of the economic crisis, the note published by Ibestat indicates, noting that the number of British has increased gradually since 2017, which is not the case for Germans. As for the Argentines, they were only 3,729 in 1997, but are already 27,965, even though many of them have Spanish nationality.

Similarly, the Colombian citizens residing in the Balearic Islands have increased from 480 in 1997 to 24,342 currently. They usually settle to work. In total, the number of foreigners in the islands has increased from around 30,000 in 1997 to more than 222,000 currently. There are nationals from all countries of the world, with the exception of Chad, the Vatican, the Cook Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Tonga and Djibouti.
