Moroccan Police Commissioner Convicted of Over 500 Rapes in Shocking Case

There are legends in every field, and crime is no exception. Morocco one day awoke to the icy shadow of such a figure. His name: Mohamed Mustapha Tabet, nicknamed "Haj". More than his title of serial rapist, it is the cynicism of his actions and the extent of his misdeeds that have shaken public opinion: more than 500 rapes.

Haj was not just an ordinary criminal; he was also a man of law, a police commissioner. The dichotomy is striking: how can a protector of justice commit more than 500 sexual assaults?

His fall, as tragic as it was, reveals a well-organized network of cruelty. Before meeting his sad fate - a death sentence on March 15, 1993 and an execution on September 5 of the same year - Haj had orchestrated a macabre spectacle. Whether in cars or apartments rented for the occasion, he immortalized his misdeeds thanks to an audiovisual system. Mothers, their daughters and sometimes even their grandmothers were victims of these abuses, sometimes simultaneously. These images, of unimaginable horror, then circulated in the sordid pornography market.

But fate has its unexpected turns. In 1992 in Milan, Saïd, an Italian-Moroccan, watches one of these films for an evening with friends. His blood runs cold: one of the victims is none other than his sister. This shock leads him directly to Casablanca, where his investigations will reveal the extent of Haj’s perversity. Justice will eventually catch up with him.

Despite the monster he was, Haj enjoyed state protection, making his capture difficult. He embodied a living paradox. While committing these atrocities, he was considered an exemplary commissioner. He did not smoke, did not drink, prayed regularly and had made the pilgrimage to Mecca several times.

Originally from Beni Mellal, Haj, then 54 years old, had lived a tumultuous past. His first marriage fell apart when a police commander sent him to prison on false charges, stealing his wife in the process. Haj, once an Arabic teacher, will be released four years later. Ironically, he will join the police ranks. But instead of protecting and serving, Haj committed the unimaginable, raping 518 women, including 20 minors, and producing no less than 118 videos of his misdeeds.
