Morocco Travel Agency Owner Jailed for Alleged Mecca Pilgrimage Fraud

The owner of a travel agency in Fez was placed in pre-trial detention after being accused of fraud and non-performance of contract. She is said to have deceived pilgrims by promising them comfortable travel conditions for Ramadan to Mecca, but abandoned them once they arrived on site.
According to the public prosecutor’s office of the court of first instance of Fez, the accused would have received sums of money from the victims to ensure their air transport, accommodation and transport between Mecca and Jeddah airport. However, she would not have fulfilled her obligations, leaving the pilgrims without suitable accommodation and without means of transportation.
As soon as they returned to Morocco, the victims filed a complaint against the travel agency. The regional brigade of the judicial police of Fez then arrested the owner and placed her in custody. Four of the victims were heard by the police and their statements were recorded in official reports.
The accused was brought before the court of Fez and placed in pre-trial detention due to the seriousness of the charges against her. She will appear before the court on May 27.
According to some sources, the owner of the travel agency would have already been the subject of complaints and dissatisfaction from clients she had accompanied to the World Cup in Qatar. However, these cases had been settled amicably, leading to the abandonment of the proceedings.
