Moroccan Mother and Son Arrested Attempting to Swim to Spanish Enclave Ceuta

A Moroccan woman from Martil and her 10-year-old son were arrested by the Civil Guard, at the height of the Chorrillo beach, as they were trying to reach Ceuta by swimming.
The Moroccan woman and her minor son swam along the Tarajal breakwater that separates Ceuta from Morocco, using an inflated inner tube as a float. The woman left her two other young children behind in Morocco to reach the autonomous city, reports El Faro de Ceuta, adding that she was taken care of by the Red Cross.
The economic crisis, combined with increased border controls and the requirement of visas, is leading more and more young people and women from Morocco to attempt to reach Spain by swimming, at the risk of their lives. A week ago, Nawfal Chekhali, a 25-year-old Moroccan, lost his life trying to reach Ceuta by swimming. His body was repatriated to Morocco.
