Moroccan Migrant Found Dead Off Melilla Coast After Attempted Swim

The lifeless body of a Moroccan was found on Tuesday on the coast of Melilla. He died after trying to reach the autonomous city by swimming.
The Guardia Civil surveillance system spotted a body floating in the sea, in the area of the breakwaters of the port. The Special Group for Underwater Activities (GEAS) went to the scene and found that it was the body of a Moroccan, a candidate for illegal immigration, a spokesman for the Government Delegation said.

The body was then transferred to the Puerto Noray facilities, before being handed over to the coroner, in the presence of the judicial authority, informs Europa Press. The Civil Guard has opened an investigation to determine the circumstances of the death and identify the body.
Since the closure of the land borders of Ceuta and Melilla with Morocco on March 13, 2020 for health reasons, more than a dozen Moroccans have died trying to reach the two autonomous cities by swimming.
