Moroccan Merchants Don Yellow Vests, Spark Wider Protests in Meknès

Faced with the authorities’ refusal to meet their demands, merchants in Meknès have put on yellow vests and started demonstrating in the streets. They were joined by the population protesting against their socio-economic situation.
After knocking on several doors without success, including that of the mayor of Meknès, with their list of demands, the merchants of Meknès had the idea of wearing the famous yellow vests and demonstrating.
This was enough for people not concerned by their case to join them, who are protesting against the general socio-economic situation. The merchants of Meknès seem to have found a good means of pressure there.
The authorities are said to have rushed to the scene to disperse the gathering of these Moroccan yellow vests, but, for fear that the gatherings would degenerate into riots, they changed their minds and remained in the background.
Among other things, these protesting merchants are concerned about new customs provisions, enacted in the 2019 finance law, and imposing more stringency in controls on products entering Moroccan territory, as well as the confiscation of products of dubious origin.
