Moroccan Mayor and Officials Jailed for Civil Document Forgery Scheme

The president of the commune of Loudaya, in the Marrakech region, and six other people have been sentenced to prison terms and fines for falsifying civil status documents.
The president was found guilty of forgery of official documents, forgery of administrative documents, addition of falsified data in a public register and fraud. Six other defendants, including the director of the commune’s services, were convicted on the same charges. Another defendant was convicted of "the offense of failure to report a crime".
The investigation conducted by the investigating judge at the Court of Appeal revealed a system of falsification of personal data relating to civil status. The defendants falsified these documents in exchange for sums of money, thus allowing individuals to appropriate identities or obtain official documents fraudulently.
Thus, the Court of Appeal of Marrakech sentenced the president to 12 years in prison and a fine of 720,000 dirhams. The six other defendants were sentenced to 2 years in prison and a fine of 120,000 dirhams each. Another defendant was sentenced to 2 months in prison with probation and a fine of 500 dirhams.
