Moroccan Man Jailed for Domestic Abuse Against Pregnant Wife in Spain

The Pamplona (Navarre) Criminal Court has sentenced a Moroccan man to 4 years and 8 months in prison and the payment of 2,500 euros in damages for violence against his wife.
The Moroccan and the victim got married in April 2016 and a daughter was born from this union in September 2018. Everything was fine until the defendant regularized his situation in Spain, explains the prosecution in the indictment, specifying that it is from this moment that his behavior towards his wife changed. He hurled insults at her, subjected her to various acts of violence "on a regular basis" and reproached her for not adopting a typically Moroccan style of dress.
In its decision, the judge mentions four proven acts of violence suffered by the victim. First, on September 10, 2016, the date on which the victim announced to her husband that she was pregnant. Surprised by the news, the Moroccan was absent all day and, upon his return, pushed the victim to the ground and "kicked her several times in the belly and all over her body", telling her that he did not want to have a child with her.

Then, in late 2017, after an argument, he grabbed the victim by the neck, slapped her and kicked her. Then, on February 1, 2020, after a new argument, he hurled insults at her, grabbed her by the leg, and slapped her several times. Finally, during yet another argument in late May 2020, the woman reproaching the defendant for his low "involvement in household chores", the latter violently seized her by the arm and banged her head against the wall.
The victim did not consult any doctor after all these assaults and presents "depressive and anxious symptoms", the prosecution points out. For the judge, the victim’s testimony is "sincere" and does not reveal any exaggeration or simulation. This is why, in addition to the custodial sentence, he has prohibited the Moroccan from approaching the victim within 300 meters and from communicating with her for 13 years. The defendant has appealed this conviction to the Navarre court. Once the decision of this court is known, he will be expelled from Spain and will not be able to return there for six years.
