Moroccan Man in Critical Condition After Self-Immolation Attempt at Madrid Consulate

A 41-year-old Moroccan man was taken to the emergency services of the La Paz hospital in Madrid after attempting to self-immolate in front of the Moroccan Consulate.
According to Europa Press, the incident occurred on Tuesday between 12:00 and 12:30. The man, who is currently in "serious condition," sprayed himself with a flammable liquid before igniting the fire. El Pais points out that had it not been for the skill of an employee of the Moroccan consulate, the man would not have survived. "I saw him running and there were people behind him trying to remove his burning clothes. Given how the flames were coming from his head, I think he had poured gasoline on himself," said Rachid, a witness to the events.
After managing to extinguish the flames with a fire extinguisher, the emergency services arrived on the scene to administer first aid before transporting him to the hospital. His body is said to be 40% burned. An investigation is underway to determine the reasons why the man attempted such an extreme gesture.
